For <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f(x)<\/span> to have a relative maximum or minimum at <span style=\"font-style: italic\">x = a<\/span>, it must have <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f'(a)<\/span> = 0. Then if <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f&#8221;(a)<\/span> < 0 it is a relative maximum while if <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f&#8221;(a)<\/span> &ge; 0 it is a relative minimum. Possible points at which <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f(x)<\/span> has a relative maxima or minima are obtained by solving <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f'(x)<\/span> = 0, i.e. by finding the values of <span style=\"font-style: italic\">x<\/span> where the <span style=\"font-style: italic\">slope<\/span> of the graph <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f(x)<\/span> is equal to zero. <\/p>\n<p>Similarly <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f(x, y)<\/span> has a relative maximum or minimum at <span style=\"font-style: italic\">x = a, y = b<\/span> if <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f<sub>x<\/sub>(a, b)<\/span> = 0, <span style=\"font-style: italic\">f<sub>y<\/sub>(a, b)<\/span> = 0.
