PAL is directly observed by doubly-labeled water method. A hydrogen atom is usually a proton with one atomic weight and an oxgen atom is 16 atomic weight, respectively. Stable isotope of them are deuterium with 2 atomic weight and heavy oxygen with 17 or 18 atomic weight, respectively.
